Sekou Matar Sagna: Senegal midfielder joins Al-Arabi Irbid after spell without club

Senegalese midfielder Sekou Matar Sagna has joined Jordanian Pro League side Al-Arabi Irbid, ending a year without a club for the defensive specialist.

The 22-year-old, born in Coubalan, has signed for the Irbid outfit after leaving Croatian side HNK Gorica last summer. He arrives as a free agent following his departure from Gorica at the end of the 2024-25 season, when his time in Croatia came to a close and he was left without a team.

Sagna, a right-footed defensive midfielder standing at 1.71m, joins Al-Arabi Irbid as they strengthen their options at the base of midfield. The move to Jordan marks the first time he has played in the Middle East, having built his early professional career in Europe.

During his spell with HNK Gorica, Sagna gained top-flight experience in Croatias SuperSport HNL, making league appearances and also featuring in the Croatian Cup. Those outings provided him with senior minutes in a competitive European environment, including over 190 minutes in the league and further time in youth and cup competitions.

Sagna initially arrived at Gorica in 2023 and earned a place in their senior squad before his release in 2025. His subsequent period without a club has now been brought to an end by Al-Arabi Irbids decision to bring him into the Jordanian Pro League.

The transfer, completed on 12 July 2026, sees Sagna officially registered as an Al-Arabi Irbid player ahead of the new campaign.
