Mehdi Merghem: Algerian-French winger joins Dundee United on free transfer from Bastia
Algeria-born French winger Mehdi Merghem has joined Dundee United from SC Bastia on a free transfer, signing a deal with the Premiership club until 30 June 2028.
The 28-year-old right-sided attacker, who prefers to operate cutting in from the flank on his left foot, arrives in Scotland after leaving Bastia, where he had been playing in the French third tier. He moves with a current market value of around 400,000 and becomes one of Uniteds notable attacking additions ahead of the new campaign.
Merghem switches to Tannadice after a career largely built in French football, with substantial experience in Ligue 2 and spells in Ligue 1. Across Frances top two divisions he has made close to 160 league appearances, contributing goals and assists while gaining a reputation as a versatile wide forward.
Born in Aubervilliers and standing at 1.85m, Merghem first emerged with Chateauroux before moving to Guingamp, where his form earned opportunities in the French top flight. A loan stint at Nancy added further second-tier minutes before he explored moves abroad.
In recent seasons he has broadened his experience with a spell in Portugals Liga Portugal with Farense and later in Algeria, where he joined USM Alger and went on to win the Algerian Cup in the 2024-25 season. His performances there also included eye-catching displays in continental competition, scoring three times in the CAF Champions League.
Merghems free transfer from Bastia to Dundee United is effective immediately, with his contract tying him to the Scottish Premiership side for the next two seasons.
