Ajax open talks for Morocco star Azzedine Ounahi after impressive World Cup campaign
Dutch giants AFC Ajax have reportedly opened discussions over a possible move for Moroccan international midfielder Azzedine Ounahi as they look to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season.
The 26-year-old is attracting significant interest following his impressive performances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he once again showcased his technical ability and tactical intelligence on the international stage.
Ounahi is not expected to feature in Spain’s second division next season after Girona FC suffered relegation from La Liga. The Moroccan midfielder is now exploring options away from the club, with a potential switch to the Netherlands emerging as a possibility.
According to transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, Ajax have identified Ounahi as a priority target and have already begun talks with both Girona and the player’s representatives in an attempt to reach an agreement.
The Amsterdam-based club are looking to add more quality and creativity to their midfield, and Ounahi’s profile fits their recruitment plans. His technical ability, composure on the ball and experience at international level have made him an attractive option for the Dutch side.
Ounahi has built a strong reputation as one of Morocco’s most talented midfielders. His performances for the Atlas Lions have earned widespread praise, particularly for his ability to dictate play, break defensive lines and contribute both defensively and offensively.
His latest World Cup campaign further enhanced his reputation, with the midfielder playing a key role in Morocco’s historic run and attracting attention from clubs across Europe.
The Moroccan star’s future is now one of the major talking points of the summer transfer window. With Girona preparing for life outside the Spanish top flight, the club could be open to negotiations if a suitable offer arrives.
However, any potential deal will require interested clubs to meet Girona’s valuation. Ounahi’s contract reportedly contains a release clause worth €25 million, meaning Ajax would need to make a significant financial commitment to secure his services.
Despite the sizeable valuation, Ajax are believed to be exploring ways to structure a deal as they continue their search for players capable of helping them return to the top of Dutch football.
A move to the Eredivisie could provide Ounahi with a fresh challenge and the opportunity to continue his development at one of Europe’s most historic clubs. Ajax’s attacking style and emphasis on technical midfielders could also suit the Moroccan’s qualities.
For now, negotiations remain ongoing, with Ajax hoping to convince both Girona and Ounahi that Amsterdam is the ideal destination for the next chapter of his career. The coming weeks are expected to determine whether the Moroccan international will trade Spain for the Netherlands this summer.
