Melusi Buthelezi: South African free-agent goalkeeper linked with Sekhukhune switch
South African goalkeeper Melusi Buthelezi, currently without a club after leaving Orlando Pirates, is being linked with a move to Betway Premiership side Sekhukhune. The 28-year-old is available on a free transfer and is understood to be under consideration as Sekhukhune assess options to reinforce their goalkeeping department ahead of the new campaign.
Buthelezis availability comes shortly after the end of a highly successful spell with Pirates, where he was part of a side that dominated the domestic cup scene. He helped the Soweto club secure the South African league title in the 2025-26 season, adding to a run of silverware that also included the South African cup and back-to-back MTN8 triumphs.
The Nquthu-born keeper joined Pirates from TS Galaxy in 2023 and saw his reputation grow as he contributed to one of the most successful periods in the clubs recent history. His market value was last assessed at around 400,000, but his free-agent status means any move to Sekhukhune would not require a transfer fee.
At 1.93m tall and in what is typically considered a goalkeepers prime years, Buthelezi would arrive at Sekhukhune with extensive experience in South Africas top flight and a track record of competing for major domestic honours.
For now, the 28-year-old remains unattached following his departure from Orlando Pirates on 1 July 2026, with Sekhukhune emerging as the leading potential destination as talks over his next move continue in the background.
