Seydou Sano: Senegal defender without club linked with Genclerbirligi switch

Senegal centre-back Seydou Sano, currently a free agent after leaving Al-Gharafa, is being linked with a move to Turkish Super Lig side Genclerbirligi. The 21-year-old, who stands at 1.94m and is a left-footed central defender, has emerged as a potential defensive reinforcement as the Ankara club assess options ahead of the new campaign.

Sano became available on 1 July 2026 following the end of his spell with Qatari side Al-Gharafa, a situation that would allow Genclerbirligi to complete any deal without a transfer fee. His current market valuation stands at around 1.5 million, a figure shaped by his performances in Qatars top flight and on the Asian stage.

The Medina-born defender has already accumulated significant senior experience for his age, making 54 appearances in the Stars League and featuring regularly in continental competition. He played 13 times in the AFC Champions League, contributing both goals and assists, underlining his familiarity with high-intensity knockout and group-stage football.

Sanos move to Al-Gharafa in August 2023 followed a transfer from Braga B, where he had arrived from US Goreenne earlier that summer. His rapid rise in valuation during that period reflected his swift adjustment to new environments and leagues, from Portugals lower tiers to Qatars top division.

Genclerbirligi are monitoring the situation as they look to strengthen for life in the Super Lig, with Sanos free-agent status and recent top-flight experience making him an attainable target. For now, the defender remains without a club as he considers his next step in European football.
