Le Mans sign Central African Republic striker Louis Mafouta from Guingamp
Newly promoted Ligue 1 side Le Mans have strengthened their attacking options with the signing of Central African Republic international Louis Mafouta from Guingamp after the striker enjoyed one of the most productive goalscoring seasons in Ligue 2.
The 32-year-old completed his move on Saturday, bringing an end to his one-year spell with the Breton club after scoring 15 league goals last season.
Le Mans confirmed Mafouta has signed a contract running until 2028, with the club holding the option to extend the agreement by a further year.
His arrival is another significant step in Le Mans’ preparations for their return to the French top flight after securing promotion by finishing second in Ligue 2 last season.
Mafouta joins the club with considerable experience in French football and a proven goalscoring record. During his time in Ligue 2, he established himself as one of the division’s most reliable forwards, scoring 50 goals in 134 league appearances.
The move also marks Mafouta’s return to Ligue 1. He previously featured in France’s top division during the 2021-22 campaign with FC Metz, where he made 15 appearances and scored twice.
Le Mans believe the experienced striker will add both quality and leadership to their squad as they prepare for the challenges of competing in Ligue 1.
In a statement announcing the transfer, the club highlighted Mafouta’s attacking qualities and the experience he will bring to the team.
“A player who likes to attack the space behind the defense and make repeated runs, the Central African Republic international – 33 caps, 16 goals – also has Ligue 1 experience, having played for FC Metz, valuable top-level experience for our team.”
The striker also arrives with an impressive international record. Since making his debut for the Central African Republic, Mafouta has earned 33 caps and scored 16 goals, establishing himself as one of his country’s leading attacking players.
His signing continues Le Mans’ recruitment drive ahead of the new season. Mafouta becomes the club’s second addition of the summer transfer window following the arrival of Billal Brahimi.
Having secured promotion back to Ligue 1, Le Mans are continuing to strengthen their squad with players capable of competing at the highest level of French football.
The acquisition of Mafouta reflects that ambition, with the club adding a striker who has consistently delivered goals in Ligue 2 and already possesses experience of playing in the top flight.
The club will now hope the Central African Republic international can carry his scoring form into Ligue 1 as Le Mans look to establish themselves following their return to France’s premier division.
