Tlakusani Mthethwa: South African midfielder joins Stellenbosch FC from Richards Bay

South African midfielder Tlakusani Mthethwa has joined Stellenbosch FC from Betway Premiership rivals Richards Bay, strengthening the Western Cape clubs options in defensive midfield ahead of the new campaign.

The 33-year-old, who is primarily deployed as a holding midfielder, makes the switch within South Africas top flight after two seasons at Richards Bay. The move keeps him in familiar surroundings in the Premiership while offering a fresh challenge at a club that has been steadily consolidating its top-flight status.

Mthethwa brings significant domestic experience to Stellenbosch, having amassed more than 110 Premiership appearances and over 8,000 minutes of league football. A right-footed midfielder standing at 1.81m, he has built a reputation as a screening presence in front of the back four rather than as a frequent goalscorer, registering once in the league along with a handful of assists.

Before his time at Richards Bay, Mthethwa played for Moroka Swallows, initially joining them from Maccabi FC after a short spell without a club earlier in his career. His performances for Swallows helped re-establish him in the top flight and paved the way for his move to Richards Bay in 2024.

Mthethwa, whose current market value is listed at 100,000, arrives at Stellenbosch with extensive experience in league action as well as cup competitions, including the Nedbank Cup, Carling Knockout and MTN8. The transfer sees Stellenbosch secure a seasoned domestic midfielder as they finalise their squad for the forthcoming season.
