Ghana’s Gideon Mensah bids emotional farewell to Auxerre as he closes in on FC Köln move
Ghana international Gideon Mensah has penned an emotional farewell message to AJ Auxerre after bringing an end to his four-year stay at the French club, with the experienced left-back now on the verge of completing a move to Bundesliga side FC Köln.
The 27-year-old departs Auxerre as a free agent after the expiration of his contract, ending a memorable spell in France where he established himself as one of the club’s most dependable performers.
Since joining Auxerre, Mensah made 108 appearances in all competitions, contributing four assists while playing a pivotal role in helping the club secure promotion to Ligue 1 before becoming an important figure in their successful fight to retain their top-flight status.
Reflecting on his time with the French outfit, the Black Stars defender expressed heartfelt appreciation to everyone associated with the club in an emotional message shared on social media.
“After four unforgettable years, the time has come to say goodbye. Leaving this club with a heart filled with gratitude. Wearing this jersey has been a real honor, and I have always given my all for this emblem.
“To my teammates, coaches, staff and everyone in the shadows: Thank you for your trust, support and helping me grow as a player and person. To the supporters, thank you for being with me from day one.
“Your passion, loyalty and unwavering support have made every moment even more special. I will always treasure the moments we shared.
“As I embark on a new chapter, I leave with nothing but respect, appreciation and love for this club. It will always have a special place in my heart. Thanks for four incredible years. This is not goodbye, but see you soon.”
Mensah’s farewell comes as he prepares to begin a new chapter in Germany with FC Köln.
The Bundesliga side have moved quickly to secure the services of the Ghanaian defender following his impressive displays during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he was one of Ghana’s standout performers despite the Black Stars’ Round of 32 exit.
The former WAFA academy graduate has already travelled to Germany to complete the transfer and is expected to undergo his medical before signing a four-year contract that will keep him at Köln until June 2029.
Köln view Mensah as a key addition to strengthen their defensive options ahead of the new Bundesliga season. His pace, defensive solidity, attacking quality down the left flank and wealth of top-level experience made him one of the club’s priority targets during the summer transfer window.
His arrival is expected to bring leadership and reliability to the Bundesliga outfit, having previously featured in top-flight football in France and Austria, as well as European competitions with Red Bull Salzburg.
On the international stage, Mensah has established himself as Ghana’s first-choice left-back, earning 44 senior caps since making his debut in 2019. He has represented the Black Stars at multiple Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and most recently featured prominently during Ghana’s campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The move to FC Köln represents another significant step in the defender’s career as he prepares to test himself in one of Europe’s most competitive leagues.
