Cheikhou Kouyaté faces questions after Senegal's World Cup campaign

Cheikhou Kouyaté has found himself at the centre of growing debate following Senegal’s elimination from the 2026 World Cup, with questions emerging over both his comments to supporters and his role within the national team delegation.

The former Senegal captain returned to Dakar with the squad after the Lions were knocked out in the Round of 16.

However, attention quickly shifted away from the team’s exit and towards remarks Kouyaté made when asked about supporters who had become disillusioned with the national team.

Responding to a question about fans who said they were abandoning the team, Kouyaté said: “Kou beug na tok, kou beugoul dem” (“Those who want to stay, stay; those who want to leave, leave”).

The comments, shared by Kawtef, quickly spread across social media and generated widespread discussion among supporters.

At a time when criticism of the team’s performances and management has intensified, many fans interpreted the remarks as lacking empathy towards those disappointed by Senegal’s World Cup campaign.

The reaction has added to the broader debate surrounding the national team following their elimination. In the days since the tournament ended for Senegal, several experienced players have publicly expressed concerns, while discussions over the team’s internal organisation have continued.

Alongside the controversy surrounding his statement, uncertainty remains over Kouyaté’s exact position within the Senegal delegation during the World Cup.

His presence with the squad in the United States was never officially announced, leading to speculation about why he travelled with the team.

It remains unclear whether the former midfielder accompanied the delegation in an informal capacity or whether he had been assigned a specific role behind the scenes.

The uncertainty has continued to fuel discussion, particularly as Kouyaté has never formally announced his retirement from international football.

Before the tournament began, Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly welcomed Kouyaté’s return to the national team environment and spoke positively about the experience he could bring to the squad.

“I was happy when the coach agreed to have him part of the adventure because he’s someone who will really give us a big boost,” he had declared.

Although Kouyaté’s official responsibilities remain unclear, his presence during Senegal’s World Cup campaign and his post-tournament comments have ensured he remains a central figure in discussions surrounding the national team’s future.
