World Cup 2026: France vs Morocco Preview – Analysis and kick-off time
Morocco face their biggest test of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Thursday when they take on France in a quarter-final that could see the Atlas Lions write another remarkable chapter in African football history.
The meeting at Gillette Stadium in Boston is a repeat of the sides’ 2022 World Cup semi-final, won 2-0 by France, with Morocco now looking for revenge and a place in the last four. Victory would make the Atlas Lions only the second African team to reach two World Cup semi-finals, while France are chasing a third consecutive appearance at that stage.
The winners will face either Spain or Belgium in the semi-finals.
France’s experience meets Morocco’s momentum
France have looked every inch title contenders throughout the tournament, winning all five of their matches despite being pushed hard in a tense 1-0 victory over Paraguay in the Round of 16.
Didier Deschamps’ side are unbeaten in their last 12 competitive internationals, winning 11 and drawing one. Another victory would extend their winning streak to eight matches, a feat they have not achieved since 2004, while also making France just the third nation to reach three successive World Cup semi-finals.
Deschamps is also set to equal the record for the most matches managed at the World Cup, taking charge of his 25th game at the tournament.
Yet Morocco may draw confidence from France’s recent record against African opposition. Three of Les Bleus’ six World Cup defeats outside penalty shoot-outs this century have come against teams from the continent.
Morocco carrying Africa’s hopes
Morocco arrive in Boston with confidence growing after an impressive 3-0 victory over co-hosts Canada in the last 16.
The Atlas Lions were clinical in front of goal, converting three of their four efforts on target, and have now gone 10 matches unbeaten since the Africa Cup of Nations final, recording seven wins and three draws.
Their campaign has already seen them equal and surpass several African milestones. Morocco are the first African nation to complete their opening five matches at a World Cup unbeaten on two separate occasions, underlining the consistency that has made them one of the tournament’s standout performers.
With Brahim Diaz, Achraf Hakimi and Soufiane Rahimi leading the challenge, Morocco will believe they have the quality to trouble one of the favourites for the title.
Key battle
France’s attacking depth, spearheaded by Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele and Michael Olise, will test a Moroccan defence marshalled by Nayef Aguerd’s replacements and goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, who has once again been one of the competition’s outstanding shot-stoppers.
At the other end, Morocco’s pace on the counter-attack and the creativity of Brahim Diaz could prove decisive if they are to end France’s unbeaten record in this fixture.
Head-to-head
France have never lost to Morocco, winning four of their previous six meetings while drawing the other two.
Their only competitive encounter came in the 2022 World Cup semi-final, where Les Bleus secured a 2-0 victory.
Predicted line-ups
France: Maignan; Kounde, Upamecano, Saliba, Digne; Kone, Rabiot; Dembele, Olise, Barcola; Mbappe.
Morocco: Bounou; Hakimi, Diop, Riad, Mazraoui; El Aynaoui, Bouaddi; Diaz, Ounahi, El Khannouss; Rahimi.
Prediction
Morocco have shown throughout the tournament that they can compete with the world’s best, combining defensive discipline with clinical finishing. However, France possess greater experience, depth and match-winning quality across the pitch.
If Morocco can frustrate France early and exploit opportunities on the break, another famous upset is possible. Nevertheless, Les Bleus’ attacking firepower may ultimately prove decisive in what promises to be a closely contested quarter-final.
Prediction: France 2-1 Morocco.
