Samuel Bastien: Former Burnley Midfielder Leaves Fortuna Sittard to Become Free Agent
Central midfielder Samuel Bastien has left Fortuna Sittard to become a free agent after his contract with the Eredivisie club ended on 8 July 2026. The 29-year-old, who represents DR Congo internationally and also holds Belgian nationality, is now without a club following two seasons in the Netherlands.
Bastien moved to Fortuna Sittard in August 2024 from Burnley for a 250,000 fee, seeking more regular football after limited opportunities in England. His departure now opens the way for the right-footed midfielder to consider the next step in a career that has taken in top-flight spells in Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands and England.
Before his switch to the Eredivisie, Bastien was part of the Burnley squad that won the English second tier title in the 2022-23 season. He originally joined the Lancashire side from Standard Liege in July 2022, following a productive spell in the Jupiler Pro League where he made close to 100 league appearances and reached a peak market valuation of 7m.
The Meux-born midfielder has accumulated more than 30 Serie A appearances from his time with Chievo Verona and has also featured in European competition, including the Europa League and Champions League qualifying rounds. Across his club career he has operated primarily as a central midfielder, contributing goals and assists in Belgium, Italy and England.
Bastiens market value was most recently estimated at 300,000 at the end of May 2026, and he now officially departs Fortuna Sittard to continue his career as a free agent.
