World Cup 2026: FIFA investigates Egyptian fan over alleged abuse and gestures towards officials after Argentina defeat

FIFA has reportedly opened an investigation into an Egyptian supporter after footage emerged showing the fan directing abusive words and controversial gestures towards match officials following Egypt’s dramatic World Cup defeat to Argentina.

The supporter was captured on video making gestures interpreted as allegations of corruption while shouting insults at the referee team as they made their way off the pitch after the Round of 16 clash.

According to reports, FIFA is expected to examine stadium security footage in an effort to identify the individual involved. If found guilty of misconduct, the fan could face serious consequences, including a ban from attending future World Cup matches and possible deportation from the United States.

The incident comes after a highly emotional encounter at the tournament, where Egypt suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 defeat against the defending champions despite holding a two-goal lead at one stage.

Egypt believed they had taken control of the match when Mostafa Zico found the back of the net in the first half, but their celebrations were cut short after a VAR review ruled out the goal due to a foul on Argentina defender Lisandro Martinez earlier in the move.

Zico eventually got his deserved goal later in the match, scoring to double Egypt’s advantage and move the Pharaohs closer to a historic first-ever appearance in the World Cup quarter-finals.

However, Argentina responded with a stunning late comeback. Cristian Romero reduced the deficit before captain Lionel Messi, who had earlier missed a penalty, equalised with his eighth goal of the tournament.

Enzo Fernandez then completed the turnaround by scoring the decisive goal in stoppage time, ending Egypt’s memorable World Cup run and sending Argentina into the next round.

The defeat sparked frustration among Egyptian supporters, with some questioning key refereeing decisions during the match. FIFA’s investigation into the fan’s behaviour will now determine whether further disciplinary action will be taken.
