World Cup 2026: Alvarez tipped to start against Egypt in tactical Argentina reshuffle
Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni is reportedly preparing a key tactical adjustment ahead of his side’s World Cup Round of 16 clash against Egypt, with Julian Alvarez expected to replace Lautaro Martinez in the starting line-up.
According to Argentine outlet Olé, signs emerging from the national team camp suggest Alvarez is now favourite to lead the attack when the defending champions face the Pharaohs in Atlanta on Tuesday evening.
The report claims Scaloni has been impressed by Alvarez’s impact during his appearances at the tournament, particularly his energetic display against Cape Verde in the previous round.
Argentina eventually overcame the African debutants 3-2 after extra time, but the performance exposed areas Scaloni is eager to improve before taking on an organised Egyptian side.
Alvarez pressing seen as key weapon
One of the main reasons behind the possible selection change is Alvarez’s pressing ability, which the Argentine coaching staff reportedly believes could disrupt Egypt’s defensive structure from the opening minutes.
While Lautaro Martinez started Argentina’s previous four matches and scored against Jordan, statistical analysis published by Olé suggested Alvarez has offered greater intensity whenever introduced.
According to the report, Martinez completed 76 pressing actions across 335 minutes, while Alvarez registered 40 in only 126 minutes of action. That gives the Atletico Madrid forward an average of 28.6 pressing actions per 90 minutes compared to Lautaro’s 20.4.
The newspaper argued that the figures underline the stylistic contrast between the two strikers. Martinez brings consistency and physical presence, while Alvarez provides relentless movement and aggressive pressure higher up the pitch.
Scaloni is believed to view that energy as an important tactical weapon against Egypt national football team.
Messi balance central to Scaloni’s thinking
The report also stated that Alvarez’s return to full fitness has strengthened his case for a starting role after an ankle injury suffered during his time with Atlético Madrid affected his preparations before the tournament.
Although the forward did not score against Cape Verde, Argentina’s coaching staff reportedly came away encouraged by his physical condition, movement and ability to create space for teammates.
Olé added that Scaloni’s broader tactical priority is to reduce the defensive and physical demands placed on Lionel Messi, allowing the captain to conserve energy for decisive moments in the final third.
The newspaper believes Alvarez’s work rate and pressing intensity could help provide that balance, even if Lautaro remains the more physically dominant option in attack.
Argentina face Egypt on Tuesday in a match that also carries major significance for African football, with the Pharaohs hoping to become only the fifth African nation to reach a FIFA World Cup quarter-final.
