World Cup 2026: Didier Deschamps shuts down ‘dictator’ claims against Kylian Mbappe
France head coach Didier Deschamps has firmly rejected claims that captain Kylian Mbappé dominates the national team, insisting the striker’s reputation bears little resemblance to reality.
The French boss came to Mbappe’s defence after another influential display from the Real Madrid forward, who scored the decisive goal in France’s victory over Paraguay to secure a place in the World Cup quarter-finals.
Mbappe calmly converted from the penalty spot, sending goalkeeper Orlando Gill the wrong way for his seventh goal of the tournament. The strike keeps him at the top of the Golden Boot standings ahead of fellow contenders Lionel Messi and Harry Kane.
‘The reality is the opposite’
Mbappe’s leadership has been a talking point throughout the tournament, with some supporters suggesting he wields excessive influence within the French squad.
Deschamps dismissed those claims, arguing that the public perception of his captain is far removed from what he sees every day inside the camp.
“You guys make Kylian Mbappé seem like a dictator… the reality is the opposite,” Deschamps said.
“His public image does not reflect reality at all. Kylian has always been mature and the whole team follows him.
“I am so happy to have Kylian as captain. Whenever he speaks on and off the pitch, he represents the whole group.”
The France coach’s comments underline the trust he has placed in Mbappe, who has embraced greater responsibility since taking over the captaincy and has continued to lead by example on the world’s biggest stage.
Golden Boot charge gathers pace
Mbappe has once again emerged as France’s driving force, combining decisive finishing with leadership as Les Bleus continue their pursuit of another World Cup crown.
His seventh goal of the tournament has strengthened his position in the race to finish as the competition’s leading scorer, with every knockout match offering another opportunity to extend his tally.
The 27-year-old has consistently delivered in key moments, reinforcing his status as one of the tournament’s standout performers.
Morocco rematch awaits
France’s reward is a quarter-final showdown with Morocco, rekindling memories of their meeting in the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where Deschamps’ side advanced to the final.
With Morocco standing between France and another semi-final appearance, Mbappe is expected to shoulder the attacking burden once again.
Backed publicly by his manager and enjoying the finest scoring form of the tournament, the France captain heads into the last eight determined to silence both opponents and critics alike.
