With a quarter-final place at stake, another dramatic World Cup night could be on the cards in Houston.
The North Americans have lost all four of their World Cup matches against teams ranked inside FIFA’s top 25 and will need to improve defensively against a Morocco side known for discipline, organisation and quick transitions.
Despite Canada’s growing confidence, Morocco are widely viewed as their toughest test of the tournament so far.
Toughest challenge yet for the hosts
History overall also favours the African side, with Canada recording just one draw and three defeats in previous meetings between the two nations.
One of those victories came against Canada during the group stage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The Atlas Lions have progressed from six of their last eight knockout ties at major tournaments and have also won both of their previous World Cup matches against CONCACAF opposition.
Morocco’s recent record in major tournament knockout football could prove crucial in Saturday’s encounter.
Morocco hold strong knockout pedigree
The Canadians will also take encouragement from recent form in Houston, having won two of their last three matches in the city.
Marsch has described the clash against Morocco as a “free hit” for his players, who are hoping to become the first nation since 2002 to win each of their opening two World Cup knockout fixtures.
The co-hosts secured their first-ever World Cup knockout victory after edging South Africa 1-0 with a dramatic stoppage-time winner in the previous round. Jesse Marsch’s side dominated large parts of that match and were rewarded with a decisive goal in the 92nd minute.
Canada, meanwhile, are aiming to reach the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time in their history.
Canada chasing another piece of history
The North Africans are now unbeaten in nine matches since the Africa Cup of Nations final and continue to build on the momentum from their historic 2022 World Cup campaign, where they became the first African nation to reach the semi-finals.
Morocco arrive at the knockout tie in confident mood after surviving a dramatic Round of 32 battle against the Netherlands. Walid Regragui’s side rescued the contest with a 91st-minute equaliser before eventually sealing qualification with a 3-2 victory in the penalty shootout.
The Atlas Lions will attempt to keep Africa’s World Cup dream alive when they face tournament co-hosts Canada for a place in the quarter-finals.
