World Cup 2026: Cape Verde ready for ‘match of our lives’ against Argentina – Bubista
Cape Verde head coach Bubista says his side will embrace what he described as the “match of our lives” when they face defending champions Argentina in the FIFA World Cup round of 32 on Friday.
The tournament debutants have been one of the surprise packages of the competition, reaching the knockout stage at their first World Cup appearance after an impressive unbeaten group campaign.
Despite being drawn against Lionel Messi’s Argentina – one of the favourites to lift the trophy – Bubista insisted his players would approach the encounter with confidence rather than fear.
“We are calm because we earned our place here on merit and there is nothing to fear or worry too much about,” Bubista told reporters during his pre-match press conference.
“We know the importance of the match ahead. It is the match of our lives, but we are going to enjoy it and give our best.”
Cape Verde, a nation of just over 500,000 people, have captured global attention with their remarkable journey to the knockout rounds, producing disciplined performances throughout the group stage to secure their historic qualification.
Standing in their way is an Argentina side seeking to defend the World Cup title they won four years ago. Lionel Messi has once again been central to their campaign, scoring six goals as the South Americans cruised through the group stage with three victories.
Yet Bubista believes the occasion should inspire rather than intimidate his players.
“There is no other thought in our minds than trying to advance past this round,” he said.
Victory for Cape Verde would rank among the biggest upsets in World Cup history, while Argentina will be aiming to avoid becoming the latest heavyweight to fall to one of the tournament’s surprise contenders.
