Algeria’s 2-0 defeat by Switzerland in the World Cup Round of 16 has intensified scrutiny of head coach Vladimir Petkovic after his side was comprehensively outplayed by Murat Yakin, a coach who once worked under him.

The meeting in Vancouver carried added significance beyond the result, with Petkovic facing his former student in a tactical contest that ultimately ended in Yakin’s favour as Switzerland progressed to the quarter-finals.

Algeria’s elimination also extended concerns about the team’s progress under Petkovic, whose side struggled to impose themselves against a disciplined Swiss team and rarely looked capable of changing the outcome.

Switzerland prove too strong

Switzerland controlled key moments of the match and capitalised on Algeria’s shortcomings to secure a 2-0 victory.

Despite possessing a squad capable of competing at the highest level, Algeria were unable to trouble the Swiss consistently and failed to produce the intensity required in a knockout match.

The performance echoed their Africa Cup of Nations campaign in 2025, when the Desert Foxes reached the quarter-finals before suffering a 2-0 defeat to Nigeria after edging past DR Congo in the previous round.

At this World Cup, Algeria recovered from a 3-0 defeat by Argentina with a 2-1 victory over Jordan before rescuing a 3-3 draw against Austria to reach the knockout stage.

However, those results were not enough to bridge the gap against Switzerland.

Petkovic’s expectations contrasted with performance

Before the match, Petkovic acknowledged the challenge awaiting his side.

“Switzerland are the favorites for this match and we are the underdogs. But we have a fierce determination to reach the next round and we will throw all our strength into the battle.”

While Switzerland justified their status as favourites, Algeria struggled to demonstrate the determination their coach had spoken about before kick-off.

Throughout the contest, Houssem Aouar and his team-mates rarely looked capable of unsettling the Swiss defence or shifting the momentum in their favour.

Questions over Algeria’s progress

The defeat has renewed debate over the progress made since Petkovic took charge of the national team.

After 28 months in charge, Algeria’s display against Switzerland raised concerns not only because of the result but also because of the overall performance and the lack of visible development.

The team appeared unable to match Switzerland’s organisation or intensity, with the gap between the two sides evident throughout the match.

Petkovic had been appointed with the expectation of building on the work of his predecessor, Djamel Belmadi, but Algeria’s World Cup journey ended in the Round of 16 without producing the breakthrough many supporters had hoped to see.

A disappointing conclusion

The defeat leaves Algeria out of the tournament and ends a campaign that promised moments of encouragement but ultimately finished in disappointment.

While qualification for the World Cup and progression beyond the group stage met the objectives outlined by Petkovic, the performance against Switzerland left many questions unanswered.

For Murat Yakin, victory represented a successful tactical display against the coach who once mentored him.

For Algeria, it marked the end of another World Cup campaign with supporters left reflecting on what might have been.
