World Cup 2026: Senegal’s Gueye responds to criticism following Belgium heartbreak
Senegal midfielder Idrissa Gana Gueye has defended the country’s veteran players following the Lions of Teranga’s dramatic elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The experienced midfielder spoke emotionally after Senegal’s 3-2 defeat to Belgium in the Round of 32, a match that saw the African side surrender a two-goal lead before conceding a late extra-time winner.
Senegal appeared to be on course for qualification after taking a 2-0 advantage, only for Belgium to score twice late in normal time before Youri Tielemans converted a decisive penalty in the second period of extra time.
Gueye responds to criticism of senior players
Following the defeat, Gueye addressed criticism directed at older members of the squad throughout the tournament.
“I think it is really unfortunate that, since the beginning of the tournament, and even before it, there has been so much talk about veteran players, as if we were devils,” he said.
“The veteran players are simply there to ensure things run smoothly, just like in any other team.”
The 36-year-old has been one of Senegal’s key leaders during the competition and wore the captain’s armband in the team’s final two World Cup matches against Iraq and Belgium.
Senegal left devastated after late collapse
Gueye also admitted the defeat would take time to process, especially given the hopes carried by the squad and supporters back home.
“It’s difficult to think about it now. We feel sorry for this elimination. We had hoped to reach advanced stages for the sake of our people.”
Senegal entered the tournament among Africa’s strongest hopes but were unable to protect their lead against a Belgian side that mounted one of the competition’s most dramatic comebacks.
The elimination also ended the World Cup journey of several experienced Senegal players, with questions now likely to emerge about the future direction of the national team.
Belgium move on to face United States
Belgium’s victory secured their place in the Round of 16, where they will face the United States after the Americans defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 in their own Round of 32 encounter.
For Senegal, however, the focus now shifts to reflection after another World Cup campaign ended in disappointment despite moments that suggested the Lions of Teranga could challenge deep into the tournament.
