Senegal’s memorable World Cup journey ended in cruel fashion as Belgium completed an astonishing comeback to win 3-2 after extra time in Seattle. The Lions of Teranga led 2-0 with only minutes remaining in normal time, but late goals from Romelu Lukaku and Youri Tielemans forced extra time before a controversial stoppage-time penalty sealed Belgium’s place in the Round of 16.

Match Report

Pape Thiaw’s men produced one of their finest performances of the tournament for more than 85 minutes. Habib Diarra opened the scoring midway through the first half after Senegal capitalised on a defensive error, rewarding their aggressive start and disciplined pressing.

The Lions doubled their advantage shortly after halftime through Ismaïla Sarr. The Marseille winger continued his excellent tournament with a brilliant finish that appeared to put Senegal firmly in control of the contest. Belgium struggled to cope with the pace and movement of Sarr, Sadio Mane and Iliman Ndiaye throughout much of the evening.

However, football can be brutally unforgiving. Romelu Lukaku came off the bench to pull one back in the 86th minute, and only three minutes later Youri Tielemans levelled matters to stun the Senegal supporters and force extra time.

The match seemed destined for penalties until deep into stoppage time of extra time. Following a VAR review, Belgium were awarded a controversial penalty after Lamine Camara was adjudged to have fouled Tielemans. The Belgian midfielder converted from the spot to complete one of the tournament’s most dramatic turnarounds.

Despite the heartbreak, Senegal once again demonstrated why they remain among Africa’s elite football nations.
