The Netherlands secured top spot in Group F at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Tunisia 3-1 in their final group-stage encounter.

The Dutch side entered the match needing victory to guarantee first place in the standings, while Tunisia were already eliminated after losing their opening two matches of the tournament.

Despite Tunisia’s determination to finish their campaign on a positive note, the Netherlands proved too strong across large parts of the contest.

Tunisia Suffer Nightmare Start

The Netherlands made a perfect start to the match and were handed an early breakthrough in unfortunate circumstances for Tunisia.

Just three minutes into the game, Ellyes Skhiri accidentally turned the ball into his own net after struggling to deal with pressure inside the penalty area, giving the Dutch an early 1-0 advantage.

The European side quickly built on that momentum.

Only four minutes later, Virgil van Dijk produced a superb pass into the box to find Brian Brobbey, who struck a precise first-time effort into the right side of the goal to double the Netherlands’ lead.

The quick-fire goals placed Tunisia under immediate pressure and allowed the Dutch to control the rhythm of the match for much of the first half.

Tunisia Fight Back After Halftime

Tunisia responded with greater energy after the break and managed to pull a goal back in the 54th minute.

Hazem Mastouri rose highest inside the six-yard box to meet a corner kick and powered a header into the bottom left corner beyond the goalkeeper, reducing the deficit to 2-1.

The goal initially faced a VAR review, but referee Katia Itzel Garcia Mendoza confirmed the strike would stand, sparking celebrations among the Tunisia players.

For a brief moment, Tunisia appeared capable of mounting a comeback.

Netherlands Restore Control

The Dutch side quickly regained control of the contest and restored their two-goal advantage in the 62nd minute.

Jan Paul van Hecke climbed above the Tunisia defence to connect with a well-delivered corner and guided a strong header into the top right corner to make it 3-1.

The Netherlands nearly added a fourth goal shortly afterward when Tijjani Reijnders unleashed a powerful strike from outside the box in the 66th minute, only to see the effort crash against the crossbar.

Tunisia Denied Late Penalty Appeal

Tunisia continued to search for another goal and believed they had earned a penalty in the 76th minute when Elias Achouri burst into the box and went down under pressure from a defender.

However, the referee waved away the appeals and allowed play to continue.

The decision summed up a frustrating evening for Tunisia, who were unable to recover from their poor start despite improving in the second half.

Dutch Progress as Tunisia Exit

The 3-1 victory ensured the Netherlands finished top of Group F and progressed comfortably into the Round of 32.

Tunisia, meanwhile, concluded their World Cup campaign without a win after suffering a third consecutive defeat in the group stage.
