Nigeria midfielder Joe Aribo leaves Southampton after four-year spell
Nigeria international Joe Aribo has parted ways with Southampton following the expiration of his contract, bringing an end to his four-year stay with the English club.
The Super Eagles midfielder leaves St Mary’s Stadium as a free agent after his contract came to an end, allowing him to begin exploring new opportunities ahead of next season.
Aribo joined Southampton in 2022 from Scottish side Rangers in a move worth around £10 million after enjoying a highly successful spell in Glasgow. The midfielder arrived with a strong reputation, having played a key role in Rangers’ Scottish Premiership title-winning campaign and their run to the UEFA Europa League final.
During his time on the south coast, Aribo became a familiar figure in the Saints squad despite the club experiencing a turbulent period that included relegation from the Premier League and subsequent efforts to regain top-flight status.
The 28-year-old made 95 league appearances for Southampton and scored nine goals, contributing both in midfield and in attacking positions whenever called upon. His versatility, work ethic, and technical quality made him a valuable option for several managers during his stay at the club.
Despite enjoying regular football, Aribo often faced stiff competition for places and was unable to fully replicate the form that made him one of Rangers’ standout performers. Nevertheless, he remained an important squad member and a respected figure within the dressing room.
His departure marks the end of a significant chapter in his career and opens the door to a fresh challenge. With considerable experience in both English and Scottish football, as well as on the international stage with Nigeria, Aribo is expected to attract interest from clubs across Europe and beyond.
The midfielder will now focus on securing his next move as he enters the market as a free agent, a situation that could make him an attractive option for clubs seeking an experienced and versatile player without the need to pay a transfer fee.
Having accumulated nearly a century of league appearances for Southampton, Aribo departs the club with fond memories and valuable experience, while supporters of both Southampton and Nigeria will be eager to see where his career takes him next.
