Veteran midfielder Linda Mntambo has officially brought the curtain down on his professional playing career, announcing his retirement from football after a journey that saw him represent several top South African clubs, including Jomo Cosmos, Orlando Pirates and Sekhukhune United.

The 36-year-old confirmed the news through an emotional message on social media, thanking those who supported him throughout his career and reflecting on the sacrifices that helped shape his journey in the game.

Mntambo’s decision comes after a difficult period in which injuries limited his involvement for Sekhukhune United. Once a key figure in the Babina Noko midfield, the experienced campaigner struggled for consistent game time over the past two seasons as recurring fitness issues took their toll.

Despite the challenges, Mntambo leaves the game with his head held high, having enjoyed a career that took him from humble beginnings to some of the biggest stages in South African football.

“Today, I’m officially announcing my retirement from football. Officially hanging my boots,” Mntambo wrote.

“One of the beautiful months of the year which is June, my birth month.

“I hope my kids will again look back at the career I’ve had and be proud of what Dad had to go through. Of what Dad built for the family.

“Today, the Mntambo clan are proud to say one of them were able to grace the field.”

The midfielder also took time to thank Sekhukhune United chairman Simon Malatji and chief executive officer Jonas Malatji for the support they provided during his time at the club.

“With that, I want to say, ‘Thank You Chairman Simon Malatji. Thank You CEO Jonas Malatji,’” he added.

Mntambo’s football journey was one defined by perseverance, resilience and determination. Known for his work ethic, leadership qualities and combative presence in midfield, he earned admiration from teammates, coaches and supporters wherever he played.

His spell at Orlando Pirates remains one of the highlights of his career, with the midfielder becoming a fan favourite thanks to his commitment and passion on the pitch. He also made significant contributions at Jomo Cosmos and later Sekhukhune United, where his experience proved valuable both on and off the field.

While injuries may have shortened the final chapter of his playing days, Mntambo departs the professional game having established a respected legacy. His story serves as an inspiration to many aspiring footballers, demonstrating that hard work and dedication can help overcome obstacles and open doors to success.

As he embarks on the next phase of his life, tributes are expected to pour in for a player who gave everything to the sport and proudly represented every badge he wore throughout a memorable career.
