Kaizer Chiefs have confirmed the transfer of defender Aden McCarthy to Azerbaijani club Sabah FK ahead of the new season.

McCarthy has officially joined Sabah FK in Azerbaijan following an impressive campaign with Kaizer Chiefs, where he emerged as one of the club’s most consistent performers as Amakhosi finished third in the Premier Soccer League standings.

According to Sporting Director, Kaizer Motaung Jr, the move presents a significant opportunity for the defender to continue his development at a higher level.

“We are proud that he will compete in the qualifying round of next season’s UEFA Champions League,” said Motaung Jr.

“We know Aden will fly the Amakhosi flag high in Europe, and we are excited to see him grow on the world stage.”

McCarthy’s move marks another important step in his career and gives him the chance to test himself in European football, with Sabah FK set to compete in the qualifying rounds of the UEFA Champions League.

The defender leaves Naturena with his reputation enhanced after a strong season in which he established himself as a key figure in the Chiefs backline. His performances played a crucial role in helping the Soweto giants secure a top-three finish and qualification for continental competition.

While Chiefs will undoubtedly miss one of their most reliable defenders, the club views the transfer as further proof that talented players can use Amakhosi as a platform to reach the international stage.

For McCarthy, the challenge now will be to continue his upward trajectory in Azerbaijan and make the most of the opportunity to showcase his talent in European competition.
