Kaizer Chiefs set to part ways with Gastón Sirino ahead of next season
Kaizer Chiefs are set to bring an end to Gastón Sirino’s stay at the club, with the Uruguayan midfielder reportedly not being offered a new contract when his current deal expires at the end of June.
The decision will mark the end of a spell that promised much but ultimately failed to deliver the same level of success and influence that Sirino enjoyed during his years at Mamelodi Sundowns.
When Kaizer Chiefs secured the services of the experienced playmaker, there was considerable excitement among supporters who believed he could provide the creativity and leadership needed to help restore the club’s fortunes. Having established himself as one of the Premier Soccer League’s most gifted attacking players during his time at Sundowns, expectations were understandably high.
However, Sirino struggled to replicate the form that made him a fan favourite at Chloorkop. While there were occasional flashes of his undeniable quality, he was unable to consistently produce the performances that Chiefs supporters had hoped for.
As per sources, the decision not to renew his contract goes beyond performances on the field. It is understood that concerns emerged regarding his overall contribution within the squad environment.
Kaizer Chiefs officials were left disappointed by what they perceived as a lack of commitment to the collective cause, with the midfielder allegedly failing to fully embrace his role within the team structure.
There have also been suggestions that the club grew frustrated with his availability during crucial periods of the season. Those concerns reportedly played a significant role in the hierarchy’s decision to move in a different direction as they continue rebuilding the squad ahead of the new campaign.
Sirino arrived at Naturena carrying the reputation of a serial winner. During his highly successful stint at Mamelodi Sundowns, he played a pivotal role in helping the club dominate South African football. His vision, technical ability and creativity made him one of the most feared attacking midfielders in the league.
At Sundowns, he collected multiple league titles and domestic trophies while establishing himself as one of the standout foreign players to feature in the PSL era. Unfortunately for both player and club, that form proved difficult to reproduce at Chiefs.
The anticipated resurgence never truly materialised, and after three seasons at Naturena, both parties now appear ready to go their separate ways.
Attention will now turn to Sirino’s next destination. Despite his experience and pedigree, finding a suitable club may not be straightforward. The midfielder is believed to command a substantial salary package, which could limit the number of Betway Premiership clubs capable of meeting his financial expectations.
Nevertheless, his quality and experience mean he is unlikely to be short of admirers. Clubs seeking a proven playmaker with a winning mentality could still view him as an attractive option, particularly if a deal can be structured to suit their budgets.
For Chiefs, the decision signals another step in their ongoing squad overhaul as the club looks to build a younger, hungrier group capable of challenging for major honours in the coming seasons.
As Sirino prepares for the next chapter of his career, his departure closes the curtain on a spell that never quite lived up to the lofty expectations that accompanied his arrival at one of South Africa’s biggest clubs.
