Egypt goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy eyes World Cup breakthrough

Egypt goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy has outlined the Pharaohs’ ambitions ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting that the current generation has both the experience and determination to achieve something historic on football’s biggest stage.

Speaking in an interview via FIFA’s official website, El Shenawy described World Cup participation as a lifelong dream for every player, adding that representing Egypt at the tournament remains a source of immense pride.

“It is a big event for every player. For me, it represents a dream that every player seeks to achieve. I achieved this dream in 2018, and now I am preparing to play it for the second time,” he said.

The Egyptian captain reflected on his experience at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, recalling the emotional intensity and excitement within the squad as they returned to the tournament after a 28-year absence.

He explained that the players were overwhelmed by anticipation before their opening match, describing the atmosphere as one filled with pressure, pride and excitement as Egypt carried the hopes of an entire nation.

El Shenawy also highlighted the importance of that experience in shaping the team’s mentality going forward, noting that the squad has grown significantly since then through exposure to high-level international competition.

“We lacked experience at that time, but we gained a lot after the tournament. Today, the picture is clearer for us, and we can achieve something special in the next World Cup,” he said.

The goalkeeper stressed that Egypt’s immediate objective is to progress beyond the group stage for the first time in the nation’s history, while continuing to build confidence step by step throughout the tournament.

El Shenawy added that senior players such as Mohamed Salah and Mohamed Trezeguet will play a crucial role in guiding younger teammates and sharing their experience of international competition.

He also expressed belief that the current squad is well-prepared to face strong opposition, noting that challenging group-stage matches could help the team grow into the tournament.

El Shenawy admitted that while winning the World Cup remains a difficult ambition, it is still a dream he holds personally, while emphasising that the team’s immediate focus remains on progressing through the first round.

“We talk amongst ourselves and strive to get past the first round step by step. That is our first goal,” he said.

Egypt will open their 2026 World Cup campaign against Belgium in what is expected to be a highly demanding Group G encounter. El Shenawy described the fixture as a major test, stressing the importance of confidence and discipline as the Pharaohs aim for a positive start.

As preparations continue, the Egyptian camp remains focused on building cohesion and sharpening performance levels, with El Shenawy confident that the team can make a strong impact if they maintain belief and discipline throughout the tournament.
