Romain Saïss nears Al Sadd departure with Lusail in advanced talks
Moroccan international Romain Saïss is edging closer to leaving Al Sadd SC after newly promoted Lusail SC opened advanced negotiations with the experienced defender ahead of the summer transfer window.
Lusail, who are preparing for life in the Qatar Stars League next season, are reportedly keen to make the Morocco captain one of the central figures in their new sporting project as they look to strengthen the squad with experience and leadership.
The club views Saïss as a player capable of bringing defensive stability and personality to a side expected to face a difficult campaign in the top division.
According to reports, Lusail have already presented the defender with a one-year contract proposal that includes the option of an additional season.
The offer is believed to contain an annual salary of 1.2 million dollars net of taxes, alongside financial bonuses linked to appearances and the club’s sporting objectives.
The proposal highlights Lusail’s determination to recruit an experienced player capable of guiding the team through its first season among Qatar’s elite clubs.
The timing of the negotiations also appears favourable for the newly promoted side.
Saïss is approaching the end of his contract with Al Sadd, which expires in June, and there have so far been no concrete discussions regarding a contract extension.
As a result, the Moroccan international could become available as a free agent, allowing him to join another club without a transfer fee once his current deal expires.
Despite being 35 years old, the former Morocco national football team captain continues to maintain a strong reputation in Gulf football because of his leadership qualities and extensive experience at both club and international level.
Saïss has built much of that reputation through spells in European football, particularly in England and Turkey, before moving to Qatar.
Lusail’s management reportedly believes his profile would provide both sporting reliability and mental strength for a squad preparing to battle for survival and establish itself in the Qatar Stars League.
The coming weeks are expected to prove decisive in determining the defender’s future, although other clubs in the region are also believed to be monitoring his situation closely.
With his contract nearing its conclusion, Saïss is now free to discuss potential opportunities before the official opening of the transfer window.
