Veteran Moroccan goalkeeper Munir El Mohamadi returns from injury ahead of 2026 World Cup
Morocco head coach Mohamed Ouahbi has received a timely boost ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup following positive developments concerning one of the national team’s experienced players.
According to Radio Mars, veteran goalkeeper Munir El Mohamadi has resumed training with RS Berkane after a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
El Mohamadi had been out of action since suffering a shoulder injury during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, an issue that required surgical intervention. His return now offers renewed depth in Morocco’s goalkeeping department at a crucial stage.
The 35-year-old’s comeback is expected to intensify competition for the backup goalkeeper role behind first-choice shot-stopper Yassine Bounou, who currently plays for Al Hilal SFC.
Ouahbi had previously called up Mehdi Benabid and Mehdi El Harrar alongside Bounou for the national team camp in March, but El Mohamadi’s return could reshape the pecking order as the World Cup approaches.
With Morocco drawn in Group C alongside Brazil national team, Scotland national team and Haiti national team, competition for places in the final squad is expected to be intense.
El Mohamadi will now look to regain top form with Berkane in the coming weeks as he aims to convince the coaching staff and secure a place in Morocco’s squad for the global showpiece.
