Ademola Lookman suffers injury setback

Diego Simeone reserved special praise for Ademola Lookman after the Nigerian forward delivered an industrious performance in Atletico Madrid’s UEFA Champions League semi-final first-leg clash against Arsenal.

The contest at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano ended 1-1, leaving the tie finely balanced ahead of the return leg.

Arsenal struck first through a penalty from Viktor Gyökeres just before the break, but Atletico responded in similar fashion after halftime, with Julian Alvarez converting from the spot following a VAR review for handball.

Although Lookman did not register a goal or assist, his influence on the game was evident across multiple phases.

The Super Eagles attacker completed the full 90 minutes and was a constant outlet in advanced areas, combining intelligent movement with sharp decision-making in possession.

His efficiency stood out, particularly in the opposition half where he recorded an impressive pass completion rate, helping Atletico sustain pressure against a well-drilled Arsenal side.

Lookman’s attacking intent was equally clear. He attempted four shots, two of which tested the goalkeeper, and came close on more than one occasion. On another night, his contributions might have yielded a decisive moment in front of goal.

Beyond his offensive efforts, the 28-year-old demonstrated a strong defensive work ethic, underlining the tactical discipline demanded by Simeone. He contributed with tackles, interceptions and a crucial block, while also showing resilience in duels and recovering possession to disrupt Arsenal’s rhythm.

Reflecting on the performance, Simeone made his admiration clear, noting: “I loved Lookman’s game.”
