Cambuur defender Ismail Baouf eyes Morocco spot for 2026 World Cup
Moroccan defender Ismail Baouf is pushing hard for a place in the national team setup ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 20-year-old recently declared his ambition to represent the Morocco at the international level following a breakout season in the Dutch second-tier.
Baouf is determined to convert his rapid club rise into an international breakthrough after already earning his first senior call-up in March —though he is yet to mark his debut for the Atlas Lions.
Baouf, who played a key role in Cambuur’s promotion to the Eredivisie, has been one of the standout young defenders in Dutch football this season, combining defensive stability with surprising attacking output, scoring six goals and registering one assist.
“If it were up to me, I would join without hesitation. Playing in the World Cup is a childhood dream,” Baouf said, as quoted by AD, making clear his desire to be part of Morocco’s plans for North America 2026.
The defender’s name remains firmly in contention for future national team selections, especially given his previous success under coach Mohamed Wahbi, with whom he previously won the U-20 World Cup. That shared history could prove significant as Morocco continues to integrate young talent into its senior squad.
However, Baouf himself remains realistic about his chances, stressing that selection will ultimately depend on consistency at club level rather than reputation alone.
“That might help, but ultimately, what you do on the pitch is what matters most. I hope I get my chance,” he said.
Cambuur’s promotion campaign further highlighted Baouf’s importance to the team. The club secured a return to the Eredivisie six matches before the end of the season, with the Moroccan defender playing a central role in their defensive structure and overall stability.
His performances earned him the Player of the Season award for the final phase of the campaign, underlining his consistency and growing influence. According to Transfermarkt, his current market value stands at around €2.5 million—a figure expected to rise if his development continues at the same pace.
Baouf’s football journey began at Belgian giants RSC Anderlecht, where he rose through the youth ranks and featured prominently for Anderlecht Futures, even captaining the side in the Challenger Pro League before making the move to the Netherlands.
Now, with his career on an upward trajectory, Baouf finds himself at a crucial crossroads—balancing club ambition, transfer interest from Europe’s elite, and a growing dream of wearing Morocco’s senior colours at the World Cup.
For a player still at the beginning of his professional journey, the coming months could define whether he remains a rising talent—or becomes one of Morocco’s next international stars on the world stage.
