Egypt FA urges calm amid referee controversy as VAR reform talks intensify

The Egyptian Football Association has issued an official statement addressing the growing controversy surrounding referee Mahmoud Wafa, as tensions rise within the domestic football landscape over officiating standards and recent disputes involving clubs and match decisions.

In a statement, the federation stressed its commitment to preserving stability within the football system and strengthening trust between all stakeholders, while acknowledging the wave of debate currently circulating in the sport.

The governing body noted that it is closely monitoring recent discussions and reactions across the football community, some of which have included disagreements over refereeing decisions. It emphasised that the current period demands unity and cooperation rather than division, particularly given the broader challenges facing Egyptian football.

A significant portion of the statement was dedicated to reaffirming respect for all clubs, most notably Al Ahly SC, which the federation described as one of the pillars of Egyptian football due to its long-standing domestic and continental success and its role in developing the game.
