Nigeria midfielder Frank Onyeka opens Coventry City scoring account in five-goal thriller
Nigerian midfielder Frank Onyeka opened his goal account for the season in style, helping Coventry City secure a dramatic 3–2 victory over Derby County at the CBS Arena.
Onyeka set the tone early in the encounter, calmly slotting home in the 12th minute to hand the hosts a deserved lead. The midfielder’s composed finish from inside the box capped off a bright start for Coventry, who looked determined to assert control from the opening whistle.
However, the visitors responded before halftime through Ben Brereton Díaz, who found the equaliser in the 38th minute to bring Derby level at 1–1 heading into the break.
The second half delivered even more drama as Coventry pushed forward in search of a winner. Their persistence paid off in the 68th minute when Jack Rudoni restored the lead with a well-taken goal, sending the home crowd into celebration.
Yet Derby refused to back down. Brereton Díaz struck again in the 77th minute, this time from the penalty spot, to level matters once more and set up a tense finale.
With the match hanging in the balance, Coventry showed resilience and attacking intent. Just three minutes after Derby’s equaliser, Rudoni rose to the occasion, completing his brace with a decisive strike that ultimately sealed all three points for the hosts.
The hard-fought win provides a significant boost to Coventry’s promotion ambitions in the EFL Championship. Sitting 11 points clear of Millwall with just six matches remaining, they are now firmly on course to clinch the title and secure automatic promotion to the Premier League.
For Onyeka, the goal marks an important milestone in his season, underlining his growing influence as Coventry continue their charge toward a return to top-flight football.
