Wayne Rooney has heaped praise on Rio Ngumoha after the teenager’s standout display in Liverpool’s 1–1 draw with Tottenham at Anfield.

The 17-year-old was handed his first Premier League start by Arne Slot and made the most of the opportunity in front of the home crowd. He played just over an hour before leaving the pitch to a deserved standing ovation from the Liverpool supporters.

Speaking on Match of the Day, Rooney highlighted Ngumoha’s mindset and attacking intent. “Ngumoha is direct and positive. It is a joy to watch these young players willing to take the ball,” Rooney said. “You wanted the Liverpool players to keep giving him the ball. He is exciting and entertaining.”

The numbers backed up the eye test, too. Ngumoha completed 90% of his passes, successfully executed all seven of his dribbles and won eight of his 10 duels, underlining just how impactful he was across the pitch. For a player making his full league debut, it was a performance that hinted at huge potential and gave Liverpool fans plenty to be excited about for the future.
