Kaizer Chiefs suffer double suspension blow ahead of Durban City clash
Kaizer Chiefs will be without two key players when they face Durban City in Sunday’s Betway Premiership encounter at the iconic FNB Stadium.
Defender Aiden McCarthy and midfielder Sibongiseni Mthethwa have both been ruled out of the match after accumulating suspensions in the club’s previous outing.
The duo received bookings during Chiefs’ narrow 1-0 defeat to Richards Bay FC in their last league fixture, which was played at the Umhlathuze Sports Complex. Those cautions marked their fourth of the campaign, automatically triggering a one-match suspension under league regulations.
Their absence represents a setback for Amakhosi as they aim to bounce back from the disappointing loss against the coastal side. McCarthy has been an important presence in the heart of defence, while Mthethwa’s work rate and ball-winning ability have been crucial in midfield battles.
In an official statement released by the club, Chiefs confirmed the suspensions while also providing a positive update regarding another defender.
“Kaizer Chiefs will be without Aden McCarthy and Sibongiseni Mthethwa. Both suspended after picking up their fourth cautions in the previous match,” the statement read.
“On a positive note, defender Zitha Kwinika returns to the squad. This comes after serving his one-match suspension, giving the technical team a welcome boost in defence.”
Kwinika’s return could help ease the defensive concerns for Chiefs, especially with McCarthy unavailable. The experienced centre-back is expected to provide leadership and stability at the back as the Soweto giants look to secure a positive result at home.
Despite the suspensions and several injury concerns within the squad, the club remains confident that it has enough depth to compete strongly against Durban City.
“Several injuries continue to limit options, but the squad has enough depth and remains focused on delivering a strong performance,” the statement added.
The upcoming match presents an opportunity for Chiefs to respond after their recent setback and maintain momentum in the Betway Premiership standings. With home support at FNB Stadium and the return of Kwinika, Amakhosi will be eager to deliver a strong performance and return to winning ways.
