Ex-Morocco coach Walid Regragui aiming to replace Diego Simeone as Atletico Madrid head coach
Former Morocco coach Walid Regragui is reportedly eyeing a move to Atletico Madrid, potentially stepping in if Diego Simeone departs from the Spanish side.
Regragui stepped down as head coach of the Atlas Lions after leading Morocco to a runners-up finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Mohamed Ouahbi has since been appointed as his successor by the Royal Moroccan Football Federation.
Since his resignation, Regragui has been linked to several clubs in France, but recent reports indicate he is considering five possible destinations across Europe.
Tottenham is said to be among his top options. The Premier League club is struggling this season, and Regragui’s ability to motivate and organize teams could make him an attractive candidate.
In Spain, Villarreal could also be a destination, particularly as coach Marcelino Garcia Toral faces uncertainty over his contract renewal.
Regragui’s familiarity with Spanish tactics and past experience with Moroccan players would provide him an edge at the club.
In France, Lille is another potential landing spot, where he would reunite with players like Hamza Ijaman and Oussama Sahraoui.
Yet, Regragui’s ambitions appear to be highest with Atletico Madrid, especially if Diego Simeone decides to leave.
There is also speculation about a move to Crystal Palace, which could offer a fresh project. Moroccan defender Chadi Riad could help ease his transition there.
Regragui’s stock has risen dramatically since leading Morocco to the semifinals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, cementing his reputation as one of the continent’s most promising coaching talents.
