Tunisia approach Omar Rekik as Lamouchi shapes new national squad
Defender Omar Rekik has indicated his readiness to represent Tunisia national football team again as the side begins a period of rebuilding under new head coach Sabri Lamouchi.
The 22-year-old, who currently plays for NK Maribor, has emerged as a potential option for the national side as officials examine new profiles while reshaping the squad.
Tunisia’s national team is entering a new phase following recent changes to its structure and leadership.
Discussions about Rekik’s possible return intensified after he held talks with Zied Jaziri, the sporting director of the Tunisian national team.
The conversation took place following Maribor’s match against NK Olimpija Ljubljana and was intended to outline the vision of the national team’s new coaching staff.
Lamouchi, who has recently taken charge of the Carthage Eagles, is preparing his first squad selection as part of a broader effort to refresh the team following the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The coach is expected to review several emerging players as Tunisia looks to build a competitive group for upcoming friendly matches and future qualification campaigns.
Rekik is among the players being closely assessed during this transition period. According to the Tunisian Football Federation, the defender has made clear his desire to represent the national side if selected.
“Proud of his Tunisian sporting origins, he expressed his full willingness to represent the nation and defend its colors without reservation,” the body stated.
Rekik already has experience at international level. The defender has previously earned three caps for Tunisia and was part of the squad during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
Before joining NK Maribor, he also played for Wigan Athletic and Olympique de Marseille, gaining experience in different European leagues.
Those spells have contributed to his development as a central defender with international exposure.
As Tunisia begins shaping a new generation of players, Rekik’s potential return could form part of the broader effort to rebuild the squad and prepare it for the challenges ahead.
With Lamouchi preparing his first selections, attention now turns to which players will be included in the next chapter for the Carthage Eagles.
