Ivorian defender Simon Deli retires from football over persistent injuries

Ivory Coast international Simon Deli has officially called it a quit from professional football at age 34, bringing an end to his over 15-year career.

Deli’s career, which began in 2010 with Africa Sports in Ivory Coast, took him across Europe, seeing him feature for multiple clubs before finding a home at Slavia Prague.

The Ivorian defender quickly became a fan favorite, admired for his leadership, composure at the back, and commitment on the pitch.

Unfortunately, persistent injury problems have forced Deli to hang up his boots. In a heartfelt announcement, Deli explained that ongoing thigh muscle pain left him no choice but to retire, despite his desire to end his career on the field with a title or a memorable performance.

“We are here to officially announce the end of my career. My beautiful and successful career,” Deli said. “I knew I wanted to finish as a Slavia player. I succeeded. It’s symbolic. I’ve played in many places, but here I’ve had the best moments. Slavia has made me a satisfied footballer who can be proud of himself. I am who I am thanks to Slavia. But I wanted to say goodbye with the title, or at least after a great game on the pitch. But my health won’t allow it.”

Deli’s contributions to Slavia Prague have been monumental. He has not only helped the team achieve domestic success but also earned admiration for his professionalism and dedication, becoming a key figure in the squad and a role model for younger players.

The upcoming tribute against Sparta Prague will give fans and teammates a chance to celebrate a career defined by determination, skill, and loyalty. For Deli, ending his career at Slavia Prague—a club he considers pivotal to his success—is a fitting conclusion to a remarkable journey in football.

“Finishing at Slavia was the most important thing, I don’t want anything else,” he added, reflecting on the club’s significance in his life and career.

Fans and the football community alike will remember Simon Deli as a defender who gave everything on the pitch and leaves behind a legacy that transcends his performances, symbolizing pride, perseverance, and passion.
