Thomas Bach, the former Olympic fencing champion, has been officially elected as the new president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). He succeeds Jacques Rogge, who held the position since 2001. Bach, a German, was elected in the second round of voting, securing an absolute majority against four other candidates. In addition to electing a new president, the IOC also entrusted the organization of the 2020 Olympic Games to Japan during the same session. The new president, Thomas Bach, is the ninth to lead the Olympic institution.
