South African outfit Maruma Gallants suspend coach Alexandre Lafitte amid inconsistent performance
Premiership outfit Marumo Gallants F.C. have suspended head coach Alexandre Lafitte with immediate effect following a disappointing run of results that has plunged the club into the lower reaches of the table.
The decision comes on the back of a 1-0 defeat to Durban City F.C., a result that further compounded the Bloemfontein-based side’s struggles this season. That loss, suffered at the Lucas Moripe Stadium, saw Gallants slide to 13th place in the 16-team Premier Soccer League standings — uncomfortably close to the relegation zone.
In an official statement, club spokesperson Sello Nduna confirmed the development.
“Marumo Gallants F.C. confirms that Head Coach Alexandre Lafitte has been suspended with immediate effect, pending an internal disciplinary process,” Nduna said.
According to the club, the suspension is linked to issues surrounding a failure to comply with contractual duties, in addition to concerns about the team’s recent performances.
“The suspension follows issues relating to a failure to comply with contractual duties. The club has also not been performing to the expected standard in recent fixtures.”
Management has emphasized that governance, professionalism, and accountability remain central to the club’s operations, and that due process will be followed in line with internal policies and contractual obligations.
Gallants’ inconsistent form has sparked concern among supporters and stakeholders, particularly as the business end of the season approaches. With only three teams separating them from the relegation playoff spot, the pressure has mounted on the technical bench in recent weeks.
Nduna further revealed that an acting head coach will be announced in due course as the club looks to steady the ship.
“Management is concerned about the team’s current poor performance and will be announcing the acting head coach in due course,” he added.
Despite the turmoil, the club has reassured fans that preparations for upcoming fixtures remain uninterrupted.
“Marumo Gallants F.C. would like to assure its supporters, partners, and stakeholders that team operations continue as normal, and that the team remains fully focused on preparations for the upcoming fixtures.
The Club appreciates the continued support and understanding from its fans and partners during this period. Further communication will be issued if and when appropriate.”
The suspension marks a critical moment in Gallants’ campaign, with the coming weeks likely to determine whether the club can reverse its fortunes or become embroiled in a tense relegation battle.
