According to reports from L’Equipe, Cameroonian striker Samuel Eto’o has allegedly informed his teammates after the match against Libya (1-0) in Yaoundé that he is retiring from the national team. Eto’o is said to have shared that he wants to “resolve personal problems.”
Returning to the national team last June, Eto’o faced criticism for several instances where he was unavailable for Cameroon, particularly during the last two matches of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers. Before the match against Togo, he was reported unavailable due to injury. In August, he returned during a training camp in France.
The preparation for the Libya match was challenging, with Eto’o reportedly training minimally throughout the week, citing issues with his adductors. However, on Friday, it was revealed that Eto’o was at odds with the coach, possibly due to his displeasure with the inclusion of Kameni and Webo in the starting eleven.
If this retirement stands, Cameroon will likely enter the playoffs without its star player. The uncertainty remains whether this decision is definitive or subject to change in the future.
