In the 6th and final day of qualifying for the 2014 Brazil World Cup, Togo secured a 2-1 victory over DR Congo at the Kegué stadium. Atakora and Aloenouvo Baker scored for Togo, while the lone goal for DR Congo was netted by Ebunga Simbi.
During a press conference, Togo’s coach, Didier Six, expressed both relief and regret. He acknowledged the relief of winning the match but lamented the points lost earlier in the competition, particularly in the opening match against Libya in Lomé. Six stated, “Relieved? Yes and no because in Libya’s first match, we lost two points. Against Cameroon, we took three points. Every time you have a chicken, the beginning is important. That’s where we lost our chances.”
Six emphasized the difficulty of international matches and urged satisfaction with the team’s performance, noting, “An international match is always difficult. Don’t complain about your team finding 10 chances and scoring two goals. We have a game fund. Be satisfied! If my statistics are correct, this is the first time that Togo has beaten the DRC. The attack worked but the finish was not good. That’s one of the things to work on.”
