Azzedine Ounahi back in squad for Girona after AFCON setback

Azzedine Ounahi has been declared fit and is set to return to action for Girona FC after several weeks out with a muscle injury sustained during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Moroccan international has been included in the squad to face Deportivo Alavés in Monday’s La Liga fixture, scheduled for 23 February 2026.

Confirmation came from Girona coach Míchel, who expressed optimism over the midfielder’s recovery.

The Catalan club also shared an image on its official X account showing Ounahi back in training, signalling the end of his rehabilitation period.

His return strengthens a midfield that had been without one of its creative options since January.

In his pre-match comments, Míchel welcomed the development. “He has recovered and will be able to help us. He is ready to play, and that’s very good news.

We now have a competitive group with several players capable of vying for a starting place.”

Ounahi’s comeback is expected to provide Girona with additional depth and balance as they look to secure a positive result against Alavés.

Known for his vision and composure in possession, the midfielder offers both creativity and dynamism in the centre of the pitch.

Supporters have been awaiting his return, particularly after his absence during a demanding run of fixtures.

His availability gives the coaching staff more tactical options and reinforces competition within the squad.

Beyond club football, the development is also significant for the Moroccan national team. With international matches approaching, Ounahi’s regained fitness ensures he will be available for selection.

His presence is regarded as an important asset for Morocco, bringing technical quality and energy to the Atlas Lions’ midfield.
