Algeria set for squad changes ahead of friendlies

Vladimir Petković could leave out Mohamed Tougaï and Youcef Atal from Algeria’s upcoming squad as preparations continue for the next international window.

The Algerian national team are scheduled to hold a March training camp in Italy, where they will play friendly matches against Guatemala national football team and Uruguay national football team.

According to journalist Nabil Djellit, both Tougaï and Atal are unlikely to be included in the final selection.

The potential decision comes as the coaching staff review options during a key phase of planning ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Although the pair have been regular figures around the national setup, their absence would not significantly alter the squad’s current balance.

In recent months, neither player has held a central role within Petković’s hierarchy, reducing the tactical impact of their omission.

The upcoming training camp represents an important evaluation period for the coaching staff.

Friendly fixtures are expected to provide opportunities to test alternatives and refine the team’s structure before competitive commitments resume.

Algeria will use the matches not only to assess performance levels but also to experiment with combinations across the pitch.

With long-term planning underway, selection choices during this period are seen as part of a broader effort to stabilise the squad ahead of future international challenges.

If confirmed, the decision to leave out Tougaï and Atal would underline a shift in priorities rather than a major overhaul, reflecting adjustments in form and tactical preferences rather than disciplinary or injury-related concerns.

The final squad announcement is expected to clarify Petković’s approach as Algeria continue their preparations for the next stage of international competition.
