Despite being Arsenal’s main attacking weapon, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is often considered underrated. Although his statistics match those of other top Premier League forwards, the Gabonese striker does not always receive the same level of recognition.
Some observers believe his perceived lack of praise may be linked to Arsenal’s inconsistent results. While much attention is given to his goals, his overall contribution on the pitch often goes unnoticed. Beyond scoring, Aubameyang plays a significant tactical role, fulfilling the demands set by coach Mikel Arteta.
This sentiment was echoed by teammate Alexandre Lacazette during a pre-match press conference ahead of the Europa League clash. “I think people should talk more about what Aubameyang does in the game because he’s more than just a goalscorer. He works a lot in defense and makes space for the other striker, Eddie (Nketiah) or me, and I think if we start winning trophies, people will talk more about what he does for the team,” the French forward stated.
Lacazette’s comments highlight Aubameyang’s off-the-ball work rate and team-oriented approach, qualities that are sometimes overshadowed by his finishing ability. His defensive contribution and intelligent movement create opportunities for teammates, including young striker Eddie Nketiah.
Aubameyang is set to return to action tonight at 8pm GMT when Arsenal face Olympiacos in the second leg of their Europa League round of 32 tie. The Gunners carry a 1-0 advantage from the first leg, secured by a goal from Lacazette. As always, much will be expected from Aubameyang, whose influence extends well beyond the scoresheet.
