Mbaye Niang: Olympique de Marseille's top target?

Olympique de Marseille, currently on course to secure qualification for the UEFA Champions League, are already preparing for the upcoming summer transfer window. The club’s management is reportedly looking to strengthen its attacking department, and the name circulating most insistently is that of Mbaye Niang.

According to L’Équipe, head coach André Villas-Boas and sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta have identified the Senegalese forward as a priority target. Currently playing for Stade Rennais, Niang has impressed with his physical presence, versatility, and ability to score crucial goals in Ligue 1.

Reports indicate that Zubizarreta has already met with the player’s representatives to initiate preliminary discussions over a potential transfer. These early talks suggest that Marseille are serious about their interest and are exploring the feasibility of bringing the former AC Milan striker to the Vélodrome.

However, the financial aspect of the deal could prove to be a significant obstacle. Stade Rennais are believed to value Niang at around €30 million, a figure that may be difficult for Marseille to match given their current financial constraints. The club would likely need to generate funds through player sales before committing to such an investment.

As the transfer window progresses, Marseille’s pursuit of Mbaye Niang is expected to develop further. Much will depend on the club’s outgoing transfers and their financial flexibility. For now, discussions remain at an exploratory stage, but the situation is one to watch closely in the coming weeks.
