Wydad of Casablanca: Juan Carlos Garrido replaces Sébastien Desabre
Juan Carlos Garrido has been appointed as the new head coach of Wydad Casablanca following a meeting with club president Said Naciri on Tuesday. The two parties reportedly agreed on a one-and-a-half-year contract, marking a new chapter for the Casablanca giants as they seek stability and improved performances.
This managerial change comes amid a complete breakdown in relations between Wydad and their former coach, Sébastien Desabre. The French tactician had been under increasing pressure from supporters due to inconsistent displays and disappointing results in recent Botola league matches, including two consecutive defeats. Although Wydad secured qualification for the quarterfinals of the CAF Champions League, tensions between Desabre and the club’s management had become evident.
Supporters voiced strong dissatisfaction with the team’s style of play and lack of cohesion, fueling speculation that the club’s leadership was already exploring alternative options. Behind the scenes, communication between Desabre and the board reportedly deteriorated, creating an atmosphere that made his continuation at the helm increasingly unlikely. The situation ultimately led to his dismissal, even though the club had maintained competitiveness on the continental stage.
While the official announcement was still pending at the time, it became clear that Garrido would be taking over the role. The Spaniard is no stranger to Moroccan football, having previously coached Raja Casablanca, Wydad’s fierce city rivals. His appointment therefore adds an extra layer of intrigue, as he crosses the Casablanca divide to lead the Red Devils.
Before agreeing to join Wydad, Garrido had mutually terminated his contract with Étoile Sportive du Sahel. His availability allowed Wydad to move quickly in securing a replacement for Desabre. However, the Spaniard reportedly set specific conditions before signing. Among them was the request to finalize his contract at least a week prior to the anticipated clash against Étoile du Sahel. This stipulation would give him adequate time to assess the squad, implement his tactical ideas, and properly prepare the players for a crucial encounter.
Garrido’s arrival signals Wydad’s determination to turn the page and restore confidence within the squad and among supporters. Known for his tactical discipline and structured approach, he will be expected to quickly impose his philosophy and stabilize performances in the domestic league while maintaining strong ambitions in continental competition.
For Wydad, the decision reflects both urgency and ambition. With pressure mounting from fans and the Botola title race intensifying, the club’s leadership opted for a decisive change rather than prolong uncertainty. Garrido now faces the challenge of uniting the dressing room, improving results, and proving that he can succeed not only in Morocco, but specifically with one of its most demanding and historic clubs.
