Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has expressed worry ahead of their crucial clash against Orlando Pirates in the South African Premier League.
In a highly competitive clash on Wednesday at FNB Stadium, the Brazilians will travel to lock horns with the Soweto giants, with victory crucial to the Premier League title chase for both teams.
It promises to be a thrilling encounter with Pirates currently holding a six-point lead over Sundowns in the title race. While the encounter isn’t a title decider, Cardoso stressed its significance for setting the tone in the league.
“Do you really guys believe that I’m worried about the Champions League matches ahead? Believe me, put yourselves in my shoes — I’m much more worried about the Pirates match in the middle of the week,” Cardoso told reporters.
The Portuguese tactician added that while other fixtures, including cup games and continental competitions, are on his radar, his focus remains firmly on the immediate challenge. “I want to close this door and enjoy the moment, a very important moment for all of us. Cheer with the boys, rest as much as possible, and pick up energy for tomorrow when we start focusing on the next one,” he said.
Cardoso also emphasized the importance of taking football day by day. “There’s no life in football that is so far ahead. Life brings us many surprises, and if we start living three weeks or a month ahead, you are going to focus on what is not important. Maximum focus is on Wednesday. Very important match, a very beautiful match to prepare for,” he explained.
The Sundowns coach described the upcoming clash as both a tactical challenge and a spectacle for South African football. “It’s a fantastic match to experience, and for sure, a fantastic show in terms of what football is for South Africa. That’s what we are going to worry about,” Cardoso concluded.
This candid acknowledgment shows just how seriously Sundowns are taking the challenge posed by Pirates, with both sides vying to assert their authority in the Betway Premiership.
