MC Alger have addressed their early exit from the CAF Champions League following a 2-0 loss to Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Tshwane.
Under coach Rulani Mokwena, the Algerian side fell short in the Group C clash as Sundowns’ Colombian forward Brayan Leon struck in each half, securing a second-place finish for the South African club and a spot in the quarter-finals.
In response, MC Alger’s management released a statement on the club’s social media channels, expressing regret over the outcome and extending apologies to their supporters, particularly those who traveled to South Africa to back the team.
“The management of Algeria MC sincerely apologizes to its loyal fans, especially the supporters who travelled to South Africa and supported the team despite the difficulty of traveling to Pretoria, the southernmost continent, following the loss to Mamelodi Sundowns and the elimination from the CAF Champions League group stage.
“We share the disappointment that everyone felt within the club with the management, technical staff and players.
“We know very well that our fans were expecting the best from us, and it is their right to be angry and it is our duty to take responsibility for this failure in the strongest continental competitions of clubs.”
The club concluded by promising a thorough review of their campaign: “The management confirms that it will thoroughly assess this participation, work on correcting mistakes and learning necessary lessons in order to return stronger in the future to the African arena.”
