Liverpool supporters have been handed a measure of encouragement after Sweden head coach Graham Potter suggested that Alexander Isak could yet feature in next month’s crucial international fixtures, despite fears his season was effectively over.
Isak has been sidelined with a leg fracture, an injury initially believed severe enough to rule him out for the remainder of the campaign. Reports in recent weeks painted a bleak picture regarding his availability, fuelling concerns on Merseyside and within the Swedish camp.
However, Potter has indicated that a return in time for Sweden’s World Cup playoff against Ukraine national football team on March 26 remains possible.
Speaking to Swedish outlet Fotboll Direkt, Potter acknowledged the scale of the challenge but stopped short of dismissing the striker’s chances. He admitted that such injuries are difficult to overcome within a short timeframe, yet maintained there is still a realistic opportunity for Isak to be involved.
The coach revealed he has been in direct contact with both Isak and Dejan Kulusevski, who is also working his way back to fitness at Tottenham Hotspur.
According to Potter, both players are progressing steadily and remain optimistic about their recoveries.
He emphasised that they are undertaking intensive rehabilitation programmes with their respective clubs, determined to accelerate their returns without compromising long-term fitness.
“I hope they (Isak and Dejan Kulusevski, Tottenham) can play, but these are big injuries. It’s tough to come back from injuries like that by March, but there’s a chance.
“Yes, I have spoken to both of them. They are on their way back and are optimistic.
“They are working very hard at home in the club team in an attempt to play with us in March.”
