Algerian star Riyad Mahrez expressed his delight with Al Ahli Jeddah fans after his team’s emphatic 5–2 victory over Al Shabab in the Saudi Pro League.
The win, secured on Friday in round 22 of the Roshn Saudi League, lifted Al Ahli to 50 points and into second place, three points behind leaders Al Hilal on 53.
Speaking after the match to the “Thamanya” platform, Mahrez highlighted the importance of the result and the team’s clinical edge in front of goal. He said: “We achieved an important win against a big team, but we managed to settle things early by making the most of our chances in the best possible way.”
Mahrez made a point of paying tribute to the fans who travelled to support the team away from home. He added: “I thank the fans for their support in today’s match even though it was away, and our goal is to make them happy by winning games.”
The former Manchester City winger underlined just how special the club’s supporters are to him and his teammates.
“I am lucky with Al Ahli fans, and all the players are as well. I felt like the match was being played in Jeddah because of their huge presence in the stands, so we are aiming to achieve great things.”
