President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Dr. Patrice Motsepe, has stressed that safeguarding the integrity and impartiality of match officials remains a non-negotiable priority for the continent’s football governing body.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Motsepe reaffirmed CAF’s commitment to sustained investment in the training of referees and VAR operators, noting that trust in officiating is essential for the credibility of African football competitions.
He explained that CAF is determined to ensure that decisions made on the pitch are fair, transparent and worthy of the confidence of fans.
“As CAF, we have a deep commitment and an absolutely non-negotiable commitment that we will maintain the integrity, we will maintain the integrity, we will maintain the impartiality of referees, African referees, CAF referees, VAR operators and match commissioners,” Motsepe said.
He further underlined CAF’s stance by adding, “CAF will continue to spend and train referees and VAR operators. The ordinary football fan must have trust in the judgment of referees and VAR operators.”
Motsepe’s remarks come in the wake of widespread debates surrounding officiating standards during the Africa Cup of Nations held in Morocco in 2025. Several refereeing decisions throughout the competition sparked criticism, with concerns raised at various stages of the tournament.
The situation reached a boiling point during the final between Morocco and Senegal, which descended into controversy after a penalty was awarded to the host nation, triggering chaotic scenes and intense reactions. The incident further amplified calls for improved consistency and transparency in officiating.
With his latest comments, Motsepe sought to assure players, officials and supporters that CAF recognises these concerns and is committed to long-term reforms.
According to the CAF president, continuous training and investment in referees and VAR operators are key steps toward restoring confidence and preserving the integrity of African football.
